As of January 31st, 2008 border agents have began to check for proof of citizenship when crossing the US border, although passports will not be officially required until summer of 2009. Proof of citizenship includes passports or birth certificates where original certificates are preferred but copies are accepted as well for the time being. Everyone from the ages of 19 and up who do not have a passport or birth certificate at the border must show a photo ID while minors, 18 and under, only require a birth certificate or passport and no photo ID.
